Students at a private high school in New York City on Monday staged a protest and locked administrators out of one of the campus buildings in an effort to demand change after a recording showing classmates using racist and homophobic language surfaced.
Students locked administrators out of the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, located in the Bronx, out of frustration over their lack of response to the video, which was recorded a few years ago but circulated more recently, ABC News reported.
Students at Monday’s protest reportedly took issue with the lack of transparency, saying that “the disciplinary process has yet to provide a mandatory briefing on the conduct and punishment.”
A Fieldston A spokesperson for the school told the news outlet that “a group of Upper School students and parents initiated a peaceful sit-in protest in the administration building, locking out employees from entering.”
The head of the school wrote in mid-February that one student involved in the video has withdrawn from the school. She did not reveal if others involved in the recording received consequences, ABC reported.

The students leading the protest said the demonstrations would continue until the group’s demands for an investigation into systemic racism at the school are met.
