The British government is seeking to make gay conversion therapy illegal as part of a $5.9 million effort to ban intolerance and discrimination toward the LGBT community.
The newly unveiled initiative comes after a recently released government survey found that 2 percent of the 108,000 people surveyed had undergone conversion therapy and that 5 percent of respondents had been offered the treatment, CNN reported Tuesday.
The survey also found that more than 66 percent of respondents said they have avoided holding hands with their partner in public for fear of a negative reaction.
British Prime Minister Theresa May said in a statement that she was “struck by just how many respondents said they cannot be open about their sexual orientation or avoid holding hands with their partner in public for fear of a negative reaction.”
“No one should ever have to hide who they are or who they love. This LGBT action plan will set out concrete steps to deliver real and lasting change across society, from health and education to tackling discrimination and addressing the burning injustices that LGBT people face,” May continued.
The effort will consider “legislative and non-legislative options to prohibit promoting, offering or conducting conversion therapy,” according to an announcement of the initiative obtained by CNN.
